Mamaladze & Sevillano Opening Reception
Our September show features the works of two of the MAC Cooperative Gallery Artists – Matiko Mamaladze & Jose Sevillano. Matiko is a painter whose work is figurative and centers on subjects, which she finds unique and interesting. Often entirely executed with a palette knife, a method which many artists don’t even dare to use, Matiko’s works create an illusion of velvety, paint-saturated third dimension, where color – not the light – creates the shape, baffling the sense of perception. Jose says that photography has taught him to see. Lines, repetitions, colors and shapes, all get sifted through his eyes into his head and back out onto film paper or a digital screen. Having recently visited Cuba, Jose caught glimpses of everyday life, faces and the human condition there.
From the Delco to the Delta, Philadelphia to the Piedmont, Johnny Never enraptures audiences with his interpretations of American blues songs from the early 20th century, as well as a slew of original tunes that honor and refine the myriad styles of the blues tradition. This gifted and devoted picker had listeners spellbound in the gallery last summer with a commanding performance that took us from Howlin’ Wolf to Skip James and Muddy Waters and a half dozen or more points along the blues trail.
