The Spirit of Women
February 9th – March 4th
Thursday – Saturday, 4-7pm
MAC is thrilled to present “The Spirit of Women”, a quilt exhibition by Penny Sisto. An immigrant from Scotland, Penny’s quilts honor women. Over twenty works portray women of different heritage emphasizing their individual beauty and gifts. Each woman looks out with strength and kindness. Quilts are free form using a variety of techniques to combine stitches, fabric, and painting. Viewers will fall in love with these incredible women.
Penny Sisto was born and raised on the Orkney Islands of the northern coast of Scotland. She spent many years drawing and painting the stark beauty of her islands. As a Health Officer for the British Ministry of Overseas Development, she ran health clinics for the Kikuyu, Massai and LuBukusu Tribes. During this time, Penny combined the embroidery, applique, and quilting techniques she learned from her grandmother with the collage methods of the African tribes.
“I have no education to speak of – 6 grades at best. The nuns taught me to embroider, the Massai taught me color, crochet, and beading. Granny taught me to sew and read at 3.”
