I started studying art in Philadelphia through private classes, drawing groups and night classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from about 1977 to 1980. I was a day student at the Academy from 1980-1982.
I've been doing drawings in pen and ink since the mid-1990's. The precise and obsessive quality of my work grew out of working as an archaeological illustrator, which called for close attention to detail. Density and personalized imagery grew out of experiencing parenthood and divorce. Color has been added as I have relaxed into my present, incorporating childhood memories, travels and the building of a visual reference collection. Each piece becomes a meditation, a non-verbal communication with myself about lines, color variations, internal coherence, imagination and voice. The work is therapeutic and joyful; I feel connected in many directions as I work.
