Inside an assisted living center an elderly man tries his best to resist group therapy sessionsso he can go outside to smoke his cigarettes in peace.

 

Cry of the City Part 1 – The Legend of Cornbread - Sean McKnight 

This documentary chronicles the life of Philadelphia-based legend Darryl “Cornbread” McCray, the man credited as being the father of modern day graffiti and hip hop.

 

Cube Zombies - Kevin Corcoran

In the labyrinthine offices of Advanced Systems Incorporated, four sleep-starved software engineers are forced to work through the night. Slowly at first - and then with growing paranoia - they begin to suspect that their manager is really a voodoo zombie master exercising supernatural control over their thoughts and actions. The fiendish plot must be stopped! But without sleep, the night just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

 

Eight Minutes Late - Christopher Henderson

A man obsessed with punctuality meets a woman who matches his need to be on time on the only day he has ever been late for work. She keeps a strict schedule, just like him, but eight minutes later in the day. He must choose between his compulsive routine and his newfound love.

 

English Blood - Lindsay Kovnat

A psychedelic journey culling inspiration from “The Yellow Submarine” and classic tales like “jack and the Beanstalk” and “Tarzan”, it deals with conflicts in social class, forbidden love, and the melding of primal existence and modern times. The piece pays tribute to the locale of the featured band Manman, Philadelphia, PA.

 

Evolution 39.57N 75.10W - Brett Triantafillou

Evolution 39.57N 75.10W is a short that makes a statement regarding Philadelphia's construction development. This short is the Cinema Alliance entry in the Philadelphia Film Office's Hope and Fear film competition.

 

Fridays at the Farm - Rich Hoffman

Compiled from 20,000 still images, this personal essay is a father’s meditation on his blossoming family and community upon joining a local organic farm.

 

Gentle Nature - Tom Bamber

Media, America's First Fair Trade Town, is discussing a Sister City relationship with the World's First Fair Trade Town: Garstang, England. Gentle Nature is a short animation about Garstang's Sister City in Ghana called New Koforidua, a community of Fair Trade cocoa farmers.  It is based on a poem by Salford, U.K. poet, Robin Graham, and features him attempting to get through his day alongside the 'wildlife' he encounters.

 

Happy Day - Jason Lockyer

Happy Day is a film about realizing the things your parents told you and all those motivational posters that you have read, might just be wrong. It is about the revelation that maybe everyone’s 15 minutes of fame isn’t that important and maybe, just maybe we aren’t all that special after all. Maybe all of us are just kinda average.

Created for Ikea’s Hometown Make-over Contest, this 3 minute piece is a playful look at the center of our universe - Media, PA.

 

Memoirs of a Smoker - Hezekiah Lewis

Memoirs of a Smoker gives a short, but powerful insight into the life of Deantre Conner, a drug addict who makes a seemingly conscious decision to live life on the streets of skid-row in Downtown Los Angeles. Through his poetry, Deantre's astounding confessions and acknowledgement of the reality of his addiction, give the audience a sense of his underlying brilliance. This documentary will take you, not only through a day in the life of a drug addict but also the life of his family members, struggling to understand the complexity of his disease.

 

My Song - Jason Lockyer

A film about perspective. It’s a film about remembering we are just a concoction of atoms and cells. It’s a reminder that no matter what our lives have in store, we should all rejoice in the simple marvel of being alive.

 

Nagymama - Stephanie Yuhas

Nagymama is an autobiographical animated short about growing up with a very overprotective Transylvanian grandmother. And yes, the story is true (and Nagymama is still causing chaos today,  at the age of 96!

 

One Soul - Arun Vaidyanathan

When a young man sits at the table with his parents to have breakfast, the fact that they are dead causes him no surprise – but by the time their morning meal is over, each of them has had a new awakening. One Soul explores what the term enduring love really is with a spiritual and somewhat haunting message.

 

Passing Time in Paris - Zack Smith

An exploration of the beauty of Parisian architecture and civic spaces with an emphasis on detail and the passage of time.

 

Prayer for Philadelphia - Rich Hoffman

The Grand Prize winner of the Great Expectations 2007 Hopes and Fears Film Competition, “Prayer for Philadelphia” is a 3 minute film that exorcises the city’s demons by calling out residents to fulfill William Penn’s bold dream to create a City of Brotherly Love.

 

Refuge - Mark Kochanowicz

To survive a sudden climate change, the poor are forced into underground refuges for survival. But there only true chance of survival is getting back out.

 

Send in the Clowns - Liam Mulvey

A story about love, family, life, death and dancing. Shot in two days for 800 pounds.

 

Senegal, West Africa - Michael Sullivan

French and Wolof with English subtitles - Michael Sullivan shot and edited this film, which is about living in the present moment. “Living in the now” is a necessary skill for an artist and a way of life for impoverished people.

 

South Bound - Jeff Bellantine

A short story about irony and how little control we really have on events in our lives. Ray is a young advertising executive that has gone through some rough times but is having a great day at work. Ray leaves work and is heading home when something happens that changes everything. Ray then begins an escapade that will take him down a path he never thought he would venture. The story revolves around human emotion and reaction to extraordinary circumstances.

The Interview - Jenny Deller

A clown and a fortune-teller spar in this silent riddle about how to tell one's own story. Shot in front of the historic Hollywood Theatre in Portland, Oregon.

 

The Woodchopper - John Dorchester

A short “silent” tribute to the filmmakers father. The Woodchopper is a personal home movie shot by, acted in, produced by and edited by the filmmaker.

 

You are always there for me - Jason Lockyer

A film about rising above the complications in your life and pulling yourself up from your bootstraps.

 

Zaqid's Box - Tim Scepansky

Zaqid's Box is a coming of age drama. After Jack finds the mysterious Zaqid's box, he gets an unexpected birthday gift from his dad, a new rifle. Ida does not want her son to have it, but is powerless against a dominating husband.  Dad promises to teach his son to use the gift when he returns from a hunting trip.  On returning, Dad shows Jack how to dress a kill.  Later that night, Jack unleashes the power of Zaqid's Box.
