PhotoEx 2018

12th Annual Media Arts Council (M.A.C.) Juried Photography Exhibit

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: All entries must be received by 7:00 PM, Saturday August 25, 2018, regardless of postmark.

THEME- Escape: What does the concept of “Escape” mean to you? Use your own unique and creative interpretations of this theme in your photographic submissions to the PhotoEx 2018 Juried Exhibition.

The Media Arts Council Juried Photography Exhibit is an annual juried photography exhibit that seeks to draw unique images from amateur and professional photographers. For this 2018 edition, photographs may depict any subject matter in any location, provided they reflect the theme, “Escape.”

In space provided on ENTRY FORM, briefly describe its relationship to exhibit’s theme.

EXCEPTIONS: Previous submissions to PhotoEx or Media ICONS are not permitted. Media Arts Council board members, employees, and their family members may enter the competition and be accepted for exhibit, but will not be eligible to be judged for awards and prizes.

EXHIBIT LOCATION: Media Arts Council’s Gallery at 609-B West State Street, Media, PA 19063 (adjacent to The Sterling Pig Brew Pub, where State Street meets Baltimore Pike), and across Baltimore Pike from the newly built West End Flats See map.

REQUIRED ENTRY FORMAT: Submitted images must be on CD or USB Flash Drive.

Submit images in JPEG files at highest quality, 300ppi, 1800 pixels in longest dimension.

ENTRY FEE: $35 total for up to three images; $5 for each additional image up to maximum of five images. Entry Fee may be paid by check or money order payable to “Media Arts Council,” and drawn on a U.S. bank. Please note on check memo, “PhotoEx 2018.” If you would like to pay by cash or are concerned about the security of the delivery, bring your entire submission to the single-time drop-off point indicated under DELIVERY OF ENTRIES.

LABEL CD or USB Flash Drive with your name and “PhotoEx 2018.”

LABEL EACH IMAGE FILE: Last Name, First Name, and # corresponding to entry # on Entry Form (i.e. Doe_John_03.jpg). Download and print ENTRY FORM,

Do NOT imbed any information on the image file itself, such as name, copyright, logo, etc., to keep judging anonymous.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: All entries must be received by 7:00 PM, Saturday August 25, 2018, regardless of postmark.

DELIVERY OF ENTRIES: Mail or Hand-Deliver entry CD or USB flash drive together with ENTRY FORM and fee to:

  • Please adequately protect CD or flash drive from being damaged in mail or handling.
  • If hand-delivering while Gallery is closed, deposit package in 609-B mailbox adjacent to M.A.C. Gallery door.
  • Signature-accepted delivery requirements are NOT available, so please indicate on your package that a signature is NOT required.
  • Your CDs or flash drives will be held until the show closes, and returned to you upon request when you retrieve unsold works. All digital image files will be retained for use in M.A.C.’s online galleries of the juror-selected works.
  • Media Arts Council will also hold a one-day only drop off opportunity on Saturday August 25, 2018, 11am to 2pm and 4pm to 7pm at Media Arts Council Gallery, 609-B West State Street, Media PA 19063
  • No physical artwork will be accepted at this time.

NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE: Entrants will be notified via email of their acceptance into the exhibit on or about September 1st 2018.


By submitting the PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT ENTRY FORM, you agree that:

  • You accept all the terms and conditions of these Rules and the Call for Entry.
  • The images submitted are your own work and that there is no copyright infringement. M.A.C. will not be held liable for any infringement of rights that might arise in connection with the jurying, displaying, or sale of any image.
  • Usage Rights: All artists maintain copyright on their images. If your image is selected for exhibit, you grant M.A.C. the right to use that image for the purpose of marketing, calls for entry, the M.A.C. website, online exhibits, printed catalogs, or other M.A.C. programs without further contact or compensation from M.A.C.
  • All accepted artists must fill in and sign the Hold Harmless Agreement. Please print it out and submit a completed copy together with your Entry Form. Media Arts Council will not be responsible for damage to or loss of any artwork.

SALES and COMMISSION: Media Arts Council will handle all sales of the artwork, and take a 40% commission on works sold from the exhibit.

PREPARATION OF ACCEPTED WORKS FOR EXHIBIT (Please read carefully, as improperly prepared works will not be exhibited)

  • All photographs accepted for the exhibit must be delivered properly prepared for gallery display in the Photo Exhibit, with hanging wire or other suitable ready-to-hang device.
  • The following kinds of presentations are acceptable:
  • Framed with or without mats.
  • Gallery wrapped canvas.
  • Photographs on metal panel.
  • Standouts.
  • No works may be larger than 24”x 36” overall, including frame.
  • M.A.C. is not responsible for adjustments to poorly framed or prepared art. Improperly prepared works will not be exhibited. Upon delivery, if any piece is determined to be improperly prepared for exhibit, you will be given the opportunity to make corrections and re-deliver until 7 PM on Sunday October 7, 2018.

CAUTION: DO NOT write on the back of the photographic print itself, which could cause an impression, bleed through or otherwise mar the front of the finished work!

DELIVERY OF FINISHED WORKS ACCEPTED FOR EXHIBIT: Accepted works must be hand-delivered to the Media Arts Council Gallery at 609-B West State Street, Media PA 19063 during the following drop-off hours:

Saturday, October 6, 2018, 11 AM – 2 PM, or

Sunday, October 7, 2018, 4 – 7 PM

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT: The Opening Reception will be on Saturday October 13, 2018 from 4 to 7pm, and the Exhibit run through Saturday November 3, 2018.

The opportunity to participate more fully in the M.A.C. Juried Photography Exhibit by gallery-sitting for a few hours on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday is available. Please reserve your time when you deliver your accepted works. A signup sheet will be provided.

ANNOUNCEMENT & PRESENTATION OF AWARDS: Awards will be announced and presented during the exhibit Opening event.

PICKUP OF WORKS and ENTRY MEDIUM: Pick up your unsold works at the M.A.C. Gallery at 609-B West State Street in Media immediately following the show’s closing at 7 PM Saturday, November 3rd, 2018 or the next day, Sunday November 4th, between 11 AM and 2 PM.

The artist or his/her designee must personally retrieve all works. M.A.C. will not be responsible for packing, delivering or shipping works.

Any works not retrieved by the published last retrieval time will be subject to a $10 per piece storage fee. If not retrieved within 30 days, the works will become part of the M.A.C. permanent collection.

If you would like your entry CD or flash drive returned to you, please ask for it when you come to retrieve your works.

CHECKLIST: Use this checklist before you submit your entries.

  • Please adequately protect CD or flash drive from being damaged in mail or handling.
  • Label submitted CD or flash drive with your name, contact email and “Photo Exhibit 2018” containing up to 5 photo submission files (each photo file named: last name_first name_entry form line #, i.e. Jones_Jane_03.jpg
  • Completed Entry Form ENTRY FORM,  and Hold Harmless Agreement.
  • Check or money order payable to Media Arts Council, with memo “PhotoEx 2018.”
  • $35.00 for up to 3 images; $5 for each additional image for a maximum of 5 images.
  • Mail submission so that it is received (regardless of postmark), or hand-delivered on or before August 25, 2018 by 7 PM.
  • If paying by cash or you are concerned about the security of the delivery, bring your entire entry submission to the single-time drop-off point indicated under DELIVERY OF ENTRIES.

USAGE RIGHTS OF SUBMISSIONS: All entrants grant the Media Arts Council the right to reproduce work selected in the promotional endeavors of the Media Arts Council when specifically promoting the arts and culture of Media, PA. No works will be used in a for-profit endeavor without the written consent of the artist.

The PhotoEx Committee is pleased to announce that Edna Davis has accepted our invitation to act as juror of the 2018 PhotoEx exhibition. (See website for theme, rules, and applications and procedures.)

Edna is well known to many photographers and artists working in other media from her time as the owner and managing director of the award winning Tyme Gallery in Havertown, PA. She organized and oversaw Tyme Gallery’s annual juried photography exhibition, among a host of other gallery activities and exhibitions.

Edna’s experience as an exhibition curator at New York venues as well as at Tyme Gallery, her own history as a photographer who has exhibited her work, her current commercial and fine art photographic work, and her service as a board member at The DaVinci Art Alliance in Philadelphia make her uniquely qualified to act as juror.
