ARTIST STATEMENT:
Eight years ago, I acted on a desire to explore a new path in my artwork. I chose to explore creating expressive watercolor landscapes. This journey led me to working on a series of mixed medium mono prints that were printed in water-based inks, a materiel sympathetic to watercolors. Along the way I included additional mixed medium elements in a collaged format.
In the beginning, the process was a bit slow. I had to find my footing, acquire some new technical skills, and find appropriate application for these new visual skills. In doing this I was able to strengthen, update, and broaden my visual voice. Several years on, I continue to push forward, experiment, and see what lies on the horizon.
All these new creative experiences are also being brought back into my classroom teaching. I can now use my new adventures in mixed mediums as a talking point with many of my students. The artistic journey, the creative process, the visual decision-making, all of it is part of a process that the students are just beginning to step into as they take their studies in art seriously. In a strange way I feel I too am still on that journey, and the act of actively making art supports my own personal artistic journey as it enhances the level of resources that I can offer my students.
