On March 8th 1971, a group known as the Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI broke into the FBI office on Veterans Square in Media. The documents that they found exposed illegal surveillance activities by the federal government, including the infamous COINTELPRO program, and sparked congressional oversight of all federal intelligence agencies.
Two key players will be in Media for the anniversary! Meet Betty Medsger, the former Washington Post reporter, and Bonnie Raines, a member of the Citizens' Commission, at this special event at Media Arts Council.
The evening will begin with a screening of the documentary, 1971, which tells the backstory of the burglary and the group that gathered, many of them Philadelphia and Delaware County residents.
After the documentary, Betty and Bonnie will join us for a Q&A and book signing.
We are excited to co-host this with the Delaware County Historical Society and hope many of our local history buffs come out for this!
