Nancy Barch: Mixed Media
Nancy Barch started her career in art as a freelance illustrator in Philadelphia. She received commissions for Scottie Tissue Company, McDonalds LPGA Golf Classic, and the American Cancer Society.
Eventually, Ms. Barch left the commerical art field and entered the fine art arena where she focused on watercolor and earned signature membership in the American Watercolor Society in New York. Ms. Barch served as Vice President of AWS for ten years and garnered numerous awards for her work. Her transition in using mixed media was gradual, starting with explorations in clay printmaking: a technique developed by the late Mitch Lyons. Fascinated by the possibilities of mark making that printmaking allows, as well as the ability to play freely with design by being removed from representation, she incorporated many of these newly discovered techniques to her mixed media paintings.
About The Artist: Nancy Barch
Drawing and painting have always been part of my life. So much so, that I thought everyone drew or painted!
Having grown up in an urban environment has definitely affected my paintings. I love the grey to black spectrum and muted hues are my favorite. Though no longer a city dweller, my formative years continue to dictate my subject matter and palette to a great degree.
Although I loved the fluidity of watercolor it was time to move on. Gradually I added pastels to my works, then a little graphite, collage here and there. Before I knew it, I was a full fledged experimental artist. The need for mixing media really grew out of boredom. I really didn’t feel challenged by watercolor and was looking for a technique that would be bring all the joy of painting to the forefront again.
